More Play Time

In the article " All work and no play : Why your kids are more anxious, depressed," Esther Entin says that children with sortened playtime can have long-term consequences.

The play decline can stop children from developing into competent and confident adults. Peter Gray P.h.D professor of psychology beleves that " lack of childhood free playtime is huge loss that must be addressed for the sake of our children and society."

He believes that  mothers are apart of the reason playtime is sortened. Mothers responed and said it was for saftey reasons. Gray provides five benifits for more playtime.

He states that playtime provides a foundation for their future. Grey believes that " learning to get along and cooperate with others as equal may be the most crucial evoltionary function of human society." Gray's first benifit is that playtime gives children a chance to develop a connection to their own sel-identified interests.

He notes " kids learn to direct themselves and pursue and elaborate on their inmterests in a way that can substain throughout life." Another benifit he provided is that through playtime children lern to " make decisions , solve problems, exert self control, and follow rules.

He said " As children direct their own free playtime and solve the ploblems that come up, the must exert self control over themselves .... "
Another benifit Gray provides is that children makes friends and learn to treat as each others as equal. He says " social play is a natural means of making friends and learning to treat others fairly."

Another benifit is that children learn to control their emotions. Gray states " In playtime, children put themselves into both physically and socially challenging situation and learn to control the emotions that arise from the stressors."

The last beifit is that play is a source of happiness. He says " we have not taken way joys of free time, but replaced it with emotionally stressful activites."

In this article they conclude that less playtime can lead to depression and anxiety. This is a huge leap between the two. My little brother dosent have as mush playtime as he used to because of the saftey issues.

This Gray guy doesnt mention one thing about saftey only about free this and free that but not about the dangers of more free time. I didnt have as mush free time and im not depressed.

  1. Okay, so free play time may not have everything to do with depression, but is it still valuable? Are there things that children learn from free play? 85
